If the pulmonary function continues to deteriorate and falls below 30%, a patient with CF is eligible to be placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant. In order to be placed on the waiting list, someone must first pass a screening. At the end of 2017, two children and thirteen adults with CF were on the waiting list for
a lung transplant. In 2017, six adults successfully received new lungs.

In recent years, fewer and fewer people with CF are on the waiting list for a lung transplant. The figure below shows how many people have been on the waiting list for a lung transplant in recent years and how many people received a lung transplant. Patients with CF sometimes also receive a kidney or liver transplant. As there are so few of them, this is not further discussed.
